Hold On, We're Going Home

Our first written piece on the Hanerino blog is sadly about our last days in Boston. After ten amazing years loving this city and its people, how do we say goodbye and leave it all behind? It's bittersweet to be leaving Boston for the place we came from, Western New York. We'll miss you all. Come visit. Soon.

Ten Years, Man

Back in 2005, I decided I needed to get out of Western New York before I ended up spending the rest of my life there. I suppose I needed to get away and start fresh. After interviewing in several of my favorite cities, I ended up in Boston, working at Harvard. And if a guy like me can get a job there, he can do just about anything.

Immediately I fell in love with this city. The people, the energy, the history (actually, Europe is where the history comes from, just ask Eddie Izzard). I got involved with the tech scene and started Refresh Boston. I became a four-time WAKA kickball league champion (before promptly tearing the MCL in my left knee). I met amazing people and drank amazing beer. Boston was my home, and I embraced it like it was one of my 12 brothers. You know, Marky, Ricky, Danny, Terry, Mikey, Davey, Timmy, Tommy, Joey, Robby, Johnny, and Brian.

Seven years ago next month I third met my lovely wife (also from Western New York) and convinced her to move here, and she also fell in love with Boston. We got our first apartment together in Porter Square, and for some reason, a dog. And then we started a little business called Hanerino. It seemed we'd never leave.

Rule of Three

There's a writing principle that says that things that come in threes are inherently funnier, more satisfying, or more effective. Three months ago we brought another life into the world, and that little guy made us a family of three (sorry, Milo). The Hanerino logo has always had three spirals. We've bought our first house three years ago. Our third wedding anniversary is next month. Three has been pretty good to us.

But last year, three gave us a scare. My father, after a somewhat routine doctor's appointment, discovered that he had not one, not two, but three types of cancer. Radiation and chemotherapy ensued. Surgery to remove a lung was aborted. Things looked bleak. Would my son ever meet his grandfather?

Luckily for us, three finally got its shit together and my father's health has turned around. Just last month he received a positive report from his doctor, the cancer in his lung had actually been reduced. But even this good news couldn't distract me from thinking about the limited time he may have, and how we had to capitalize on that. In fact, as I write this, he's dealing with sharp pains on his right side that could be serious.

Family First

Those of you who know us well probably won't be all that surprised by our plans to move west. We've spent the last six years traveling back and forth to Western New York almost monthly. It had gotten to the point that we would refer to our condo as the "investment property."

I grew up with a large extended family, and that meant a lot to me. I'm close with my aunts and uncles, cousins, and the whole lot. So it's important to me that my son gets that same experience. And it doesn't hurt that the entire family is starved for baby time either.

There will be plenty of things to miss about Boston though (the driving is not one of them), and it hurts a little bit just to think about living somewhere else. So many great memories were made here, so many great friends. But we have to put our family first, and that means being closer to the ones we love even if it means leaving all of this behind.

Getting a Refresh

Eight years ago I started a little thing called Refresh Boston. A dozen people attended the first event and a few months later we had a speaker, an unknown developer who spoke about a JavaScript library he created. He called it jQuery, maybe you've heard of it?. Several years later the always entertaining Jared Spool drew over 100 people to an event. And up until recently, we've had regular events with great attendance.

But 2014 has seen zero Refresh events. Between having a baby and preparing for a move and having venue issues, we've lost our momentum. I knew that even if I wasn't moving away, I'd need help. And now I've got that help.

I'm leaving Refresh Boston in good hands, and events will continue. In fact, we've got a special reboot event scheduled for Thursday, September 18th with none other than Mat Marquis. It will be my last and I hope to see you there. More details to come, but your new hosts will be Tim from Fresh Tilled Soil & Ian from Future Insights. We've talked things over and they're prepared to make Refresh even better by bringing you more fantastic events while sticking to the mantra we expect from Refresh chapters. As much as I'll miss putting these monthly events together, I feel good about the future of Refresh Boston.

Watch Out, Rachacha

Though we're leaving all of this behind as we move from Boston, our hope is to get involved with the web and design communities in Rochester. The Refresh chapter there has been quiet for a long time, but I'm working to bring it back and restore monthly events once again.

And as exiting board members of the Boston chapter of AIGA, we plan on getting involved with the Upstate New York chapter as well. Speaking of which, our friends here in Boston are in need of a volunteer board member to fill the void we're leaving, as well as other open positions. If you're interested, get in touch with them.

We're excited for our return to Western New York and we're ready to inject ourselves into the community there. If you run a design studio, an event, a meetup, or just spend time working on web stuff, let's talk sometime soon. Possibly over a coffee, or a beer.

Last Crawl

With only a few weeks left before we say goodbye to Boston, we wanted to put together a going away party of sorts to make sure we saw as many of our friends and colleagues, and favorite places, as possible. So we've decided, in Boston fashion, to do one last pub crawl on Saturday, September 6th. It'll be an all-day event, and we'll post the schedule online so that you'll be able to meet up with us along the way and share a drink. And you're obviously welcome to join us for an entire day of drinking if that's your thing too.

Patrick and Jenna

Please, join us for some beverages. We can't drink them all.

If you can join us, we'd love to see you. Just visit the Last Crawl for Alcohol page and RSVP using MailChimp's excellent Gather tool so we can let you know about updates to the pub crawl and send you day-of text messages about where we'll be (your phone number will be deleted from MailChimp's database the day after the event for privacy concerns).

We'll miss you, Boston. You've been really good to us, and we won't forget that.

PS. Yes, I titled this post after the Drake song of the same name. But I urge you to listen to Christina Grimmie's cover from The Voice. It's pretty magical.

Let's talk
